The Serra da Estrela Region is a key reference in today's national natural and cultural tourism. The historical villages, the local traditions, the regional gastronomy, the natural landscapes and the existence of a rich and diversified fauna and flora - with rare species like the otter, the black stork, the mountain lizard, the dew, the yew, the narcissus and the wild orchids - offer all visitors unforgettable moments of leisure and contact with unique local nature and culture.
The Natural Park of Serra da Estrela provides a network of well signalled pedestrian itineraries about 220 miles long, consisting of three big routes and six alternatives, whose objective is emphasising touristic, cultural and environmental aspects of this protected area.
The existence of this network of itineraries, along with the fact that several public and private entities organize pedestrian walks in the region, can constitute an alternative touristic product which enables the visitors to discover, in a healthy and enriching way, the attractions of this environmentally interesting region.
